Jane April Lindner Books

Jane is a modern day spin on the classic Jane Eyre novel. Jane’s lost everything her parents has passed away leaving her poor without a way to pay for school, she’s never been close to her siblings and now she’s forced to find a job. Take a job as a nanny shouldn’t be hard even if the agency wants her to work for a celebrity she’s not into all that trendy stuff. Her first Client happens to be the famous rock star Nico Rathburn, and the only reason she knows about him is her brother was obsessed with his third album. Before heading to his home she looks him up learning about his time in the spotlight from drinking, to drugs even a whirl wind marriage and a daughter with a European singer.

Jane arrives at Thornfield Park to learn that Nico isn’t even home and no one is sure exactly when he will roll into the estate. Jane instantly befriends Maddy quickly fitting into life around the home, and starting to feel like she really belongs. While on one of her painting walks she’s run off the road by a fast driver who she later learns is the elusive Nico Rathburn. The more Jane gets to know Nico the more enchanted she is with him, quickly falling head over heels in love with him and her life at Thornfield. When he returns home with a beautiful photographer even admitting he’s going to marry her Jane knows she must leave. Before that can happen he confesses his love for her and the pair decide to marry but someone shows up at the wedding changing everything. Will Jane be able to accept the secrets and truth that Nico has been hiding or will she leave forever?

Jane reminds me very much of the Jane in the classic and I think the author did a great job of bringing her into the modern world. I found myself loving Jane she’s such a sweet innocent girl who fell in love with a rock star who changed her life forever and she found the one thing she has spent her whole life looking for. I liked Nico even thought I knew how it was going to play out he’s a good guy just maybe didn’t make the right choices every time.

I love Jane Eyre it’s one of my all-time favorite classic’s however it’s been ages since I’ve read it. Jane isn’t a new concept but I think the author did a great job putting the modern spin on the classic. I loved the characters they are easy to connect new Jane may have just pushed classic Jane out of my favorite classic spot. I enjoyed every moment of reading Jane and Nico’s story it’s a captivating story that I found hard to put down even though I knew how it would play out. I really enjoyed the authors writing style it’s beautifully done she’s woven an intricate emotional story that captured my heart as well as imagination. I purchased this one a long time ago in paperback but never seemed to get around to it now I can’t believe I waited so long. I know Jane will be one of those books I will read over and over in the future. Jane is a mostly clean romance while they do have a little steam it’s tastefully done. I know teens as well as adults will fall in love with Jane like I did. This is my first novel by the author but I'm already anxiously looking forward to reading her other books. I really just loved Jane it was beautiful.

Jane April Lindner Books Reviews

Reading this contemporary adaptation reminded me of the fact that Jane Eyre is pretty much my favorite novel of all time. I literally could not put this down and read until 5AM to finish it. Lindner's "Jane" not only perfectly captures the characters, relationships, and psychological and social issues that were present in Jane Eyre, but all of this makes even more sense when you're reading it from a contemporary perspective. When you read the original, you may feel distanced from what's going on because that kind of thing would never happen these days. For example, you may think that the class distinctions in Jane Eyre wouldn't happen today, but the way our society puts rock stars up on a pedestal is really no different. Also, in Jane Eyre she comes across sometimes as being a bit puritanical or prudish for modern tastes, but Lindner's Jane's mindset, which is very close to the original Jane's mindset, appears to be no more than pure common sense, selflessness, and self-acceptance. I think my favorite part of Lindner's "Jane" was actually my least favorite part in the original - her time away from Thornfield. I also loved Jane's reaction to shopping in NYC.

The only reason I'm not giving this the full 5 stars is because it lacked the most distinctive aspects of Jane Eyre - that haunting, moody, scary, Gothic quality. Also, her relationships with her family members were annoying and not as realistic as her relationships with the other characters.
Jane Eyre is one of my favorite books of all time so this retelling had a lot to live up to for me. I will start by saying that the author's writing is lovely and appealed to me. I will check out her other works because I'm curious what she can do with an original story of her own.

I liked Jane and her quiet ways, though I thought she was a bit of a doormat to her brother and sister. Her family seemed almost a bit too cold to believe, especially her mother who seemed full of love for her two elder kids but had nothing but disdain for her youngest daughter.

I really liked Nico and he made a great modern day Mr Rochester. I thought the temperamental yet endearing older rock star was perfect. It was great how the author used the news articles and media coverage to show us his background and help build his character.

Now for the story itself. I think if you are going to do a modern retelling of a classic, you should look to capture the spirit of the original in a new storyline. If Jane Eyre by Bronte and Jane by Lindner were road maps, you could lay one map over the other and the route would look almost identical. Sure the settings are different and the names have been changed but the plot is almost identical, as are the emotions portrayed in the scenes.

**SPOILERS BELOW**
You've got the two main characters, the little girl, the housekeeper, the insane wife and the servant upstairs. Even the minister and his sisters were almost the same. I thought having the insane ex-wife living in the attic was unrealistic. In the 1800s, you could conceive someone keeping a mentally ill person locked away upstairs like that because asylums were so horrible. But for a modern man with Nico's money and connections to keep his obviously dangerous wife upstairs with his little girl in the house did not ring true for me.
**END SPOILERS**

I found the story predictable but having read Jane Eyre so many times, there could be no surprises for me in this book. If you have not read Jane Eyre, this is still a good book in my opinion and a nice change from the teenage angst prevalent in many books in the young adult genre today. Still, as with most things, there is nothing like the original.
