This book could have been so much better had everything not happened so fast. It rendered almost everything unbelievable. It started off really well, seeing Nicole and Brian living their lives so close to each other, and how easy it is not to see what sometimes goes on in your own neighborhood.Nicole's abuse at the hands of her boyfriend John is described in sickening detail. Her face is disfigured, her nose is bent, she's missing teeth. When he finally beats her almost to death, she meets Brian and her life drastically changes. Once this happens, everything moves at warp speed and all I could do was keep rolling my eyes at everything.
Brian morphed quickly from sweet, sensitive guy to lecherous creeper. Nicole's been out of the hospital for ONE WEEK and he's obsessed with her "rockin' body" and wants to kiss her (and more) all the time. He's so pushy, wondering why she won't open up and spill her guts when she's only known him a few days. And he's always telling her how beautiful she is. Way too far fetched when everyone else who's seen her face recoils in horror.
And Nicole went from scared mouse to Supergirl almost overnight. That doesn't seem plausible considering the hell she'd been through. She made a huge deal about not going to therapy, but she keeps spouting "therapy talk". And still at this point it had only been weeks since she nearly died, so it felt inauthentic.
Then there are all the questions that never seemed to get answered: Why didn't Brian tell the police who John was? Nicole didn't need to give a statement in order for the police to press charges. Why wasn't Brian more worried about keeping his kid safe? How does someone fill out the mounds of hospital paperwork without using a real name, SSN, address...
The final straw was the whole "kitten" situation. Nothing about it made sense or was the least bit believable. And then everything ends in a nice neat bow, how I wish it was like that for real life abuse victims.

Don't Make Me Beautiful edition by Elle Casey Romance eBooks Reviews
This was a wonderfully tragic story. Nicole was only 22 years old but she experienced so much horror and tragedy. She's been abused and held hostage in her house for 3 years. No one knows she's there except her captive, her boyfriend John. A young neighbor boy is out playing with a ball he caught at the game and it crashes into her window. Trying to get the ball back, he sees her and it's a surprise and scary. She has been abused so much and so badly that she doesn't really look human anymore but more like a monster.
Nicole was only 19 when she met John and thought he was a wonderful man. When she finds out otherwise, it's too late and she's trapped. She tried to escape but she was brought back and the repercussions were so bad that she's scared to try again. She's taken to the hospital when Brian sees her and he will do anything to protect her. He sees what she's been through and wants to help her. She's so confused and scared to trust anyone. She's been so alone and so scared that she can't believe someone she doesn't know is trying to help her. She wonders what the catch could be. She's sadly seen the horrors of what people can do. She appreciates all Brian and his family and friends do for her. She starts feeling like part of the family. She has a problem with people calling her beautiful. She has a problem with beauty because she believes that is what led her to a man like John.
Brian is a single father who moved into the neighborhood about 4 months ago. He and his ex-wife have a wonderful relationship and stay best friends. He's a wonderful father and just a caring person in general. When he finds Nicole, he can't help but just want to help her. In time he realizes she's just a wonderful person inside and so strong. He's a great looking guy with a wonderful body. He sees beyond her appearances and he falls for her.
Definitely worth reading!
Let me start by saying this subject matter, domestic abuse, is very near and dear to my heart. I think it is very serious and my heart goes out to individuals in these situations.
Nicole is living with a monster. For the past three years she has endured endless abuse. The mental abuse has broken her down and made her weak and vulnerable. The physical abuse has made her look like a monster, to the point she scares children.
A lot of people who read this have issues with Nicole staying in an abusive relationship for 3 years, or have issues with her refusal to go to the police after the beating that nearly took her life. I am not one of those people. I think it is very realistic, and I feel that it is easy for us women who have never been in that situation to say what we would do.
When I started reading this I actually told the girls buddy reading with me, that I loved this story and it could easily become a favorite. My heart broke for Nicole and I loved that Brian was so compassionate towards a stranger.
Then at around 35% the story lost me. Here is how I felt.
I was traveling down the interstate going 70 mph, on the edge of my seat with excitement. Then all the sudden my car died, and I started coasting. I had to wait until about 60% for things to start back up again. Only to have them slow back down again.
Honestly, I wish I loved this one, and going in I had high hopes.
In the end it fell flat for a few reasons. I didn’t love how the story seemed to slow down to an almost halt, before picking up over 20% later. Once it did pick up again, it didn’t take long for things to level out again. I didn’t love the insta-love connection. I get she is damaged, but it felt like the insta-love was coming more for Brian then Nicole.
I enjoyed this story, but didn’t love it. I will say if you do take the time to read it, I recommend finishing it. There were multiple times I was ready to throw in the towel, but I am glad I stuck it out and finished it.
