The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest A Medieval Fairy Tale Melanie Dickerson 9780718026240 Books
The beautiful cover first drew me to look inside; then author whisked me into the forest where Odette Menkels and her team are hunting. By day Odette teaches poor children to read and by night she poaches deer to feed these children. She knows what it’s like to be an orphan begging on the streets for food.Odette is the niece of a prosperous merchant named Rutger, who found her on the streets and placed her in a life of privilege. Her uncle has not forced her to marry but has treated her to a tutor so teaches Odette different languages and allows her read the scriptures.
Odette hears a familiar love ballad and thinks, “The words made Odette wrinkle her nose. She did not like to admit, but she did hope someday she might want to “lock someone away in her heart” and lose the key. But unless he was wealthy and willing to help the poor, she feared she might be destined to go on poaching deer until she grew too old to stretch a bowstring.”
Jorgen Hartman is the new forester. He’s honorable, handsome and hardworking. He tells Odette, “Poaching cannot be tolerated. The king’s land, forests, and game in this region are entrusted to me and it is my duty to see that they are maintained and protected.”
This author is skilled in storytelling and brings this Robin Hood like adventure to life in a unique way. I adored her strong female character and Jorgen the Forester trying hard to do the right thing when it seemed impossible for them to do it. This author does a great job in having you not like a few characters in the story too; like Mathis Papendrop who is a wealthy, respectable young man who adores Odette. He says he’ll give her breathing room to make up her mind about marrying him but nothing is beyond his scope of doing in order to get his way. Odette wants to marry for love! Was that a wrong thing to hope for?
Another thing she struggled with was her justification in breaking the law to feed the poor. “She knows her actions might hurt the people around her but what about the hungry children?” I enjoyed Odette’s journey in discovering how important it was to live a life of integrity all the way around. Not just in one part of life!
As the story unfolds you’ll shake your head and smirk as you wonder who was betraying whom. This is a story with rich characters with themes of faith, loyalty, trusting God, integrity, loss, doing the right thing. The author weaves in suspense, drama, a mystery and a splash of romance along with a mascaraed ball. She has it all!! It’s a fun and delightful read.
This would make a good book club pick there is a lot going on. The author has included 14 discussion questions to help keep the discussion lively. This book makes for a fun escape too!
I would love to see this on the big screen!! Just saying! Can’t wait to read this author’s next book titled The Golden Braid the caption reads, “The one who needs rescuing isn’t always the one in the tower.” Release date is November 2015 mark your calendars. I’m marking mine!

The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest A Medieval Fairy Tale Melanie Dickerson 9780718026240 Books Reviews
I was fortunate and so excited to receive an Advanced Reader's copy of The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest, and I wasn't disappointed.
Odette not only illegally kills deer to feed the poor and orphaned children, she rescues a young girl from a brothel and teaches the poor children to read.
Odette falls in love with Jorgen, the forester, who is trying to catch the poacher. She also finds out that her uncle is not the man that she thought he was, even though he has raised her and has always been very kind. He tries to persuade her to marry a man she does not love.
After Odette is injured and captured by the forester, she expects to be thrown into the dungeon.
What will become of the poor and orphaned children is paramount on her mind. Melanie does a brilliant job of working everything out in the end. It was very emotional for me. I loved it and will give this book 5 stars.
Melanie Dickerson has done it again. Her Thornbeck series is a hit. Book one, The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest is a charming and entertaining tale of a young woman, Odette, who poaches off the margrave’s forest in order to feed the poor children, which she also teaches. Jorgen is the margrave’s forester and is determined to rid the forest of its poacher, as well as avenge the death of his father who was killed by a poacher. When Odette meets Jorgen at a Midsummer festival and they begin to have affections for each other, this complicates everything. For little does Jorgen know that Odette is the poacher. Filled with exciting characters, a twist on a couple of fairytales, including Robin Hood and The Swan Princess, and an excellent story with plenty of plot twists, readers are not going to want to put this exciting new adventure, fairytale down!

The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest is the first of Melanie’s medieval books for older readers. Odette Menkels, the heroine is 21 (not that this older heroine bothered my girls at all—the youngest of them finished the book first). Because of her background, she discovers within herself a desire to help the poorest and most vulnerable of her fellow townspeople—the orphaned and very poor children. While she is certain that God looks in favor at her scheme to steal from the rich by poaching game from the local noble’s estate, as she becomes friends with the young man entrusted by the noble to catch the poacher, she starts to question her convictions.
Odette finds herself torn between her growing attraction for the man tasked with catching her and the respectability of marrying another suitor who’s wealth would allow her to help the poor in a more traditional way.
The author does a superb job of exploring the character’s motives and feelings so that the reader understands why they react to each new plot twist they way that they do. Readers who have dealt with betrayal at the hands of friends or family members will especially relate to the main characters, Odette and Jorgen, as they explore what it means to forgive.
The details about medieval life sprinkled throughout the story make the setting come alive without detracting from the plot.
If you’re looking for a great story with a little romance, a little mystery and a lot of character, look no further than The Huntress of Thornbeck Forest.
