Come back with me to Blighty in 1977, shivering in yet another Winter of Discombobulation - a throwback interlude punctuated by punk politics and espionage of the Cold War kind. This novel is an essential read for the children of that era - and their children too. It takes the reader on a bitterly nostalgic trip through the uncertainty of those times: when Graham Green was on the menu, Elvis Costello was on the record-player and blowing smoke rings from 'Three Castles' roll-o's could be construed as a coded 'come-on' for non-committal sexual interaction. Intriguingly, illusive, conforming and yet politely subversive, this novel travels deeply where the class of '77 traveled lightly: moving stealthily through iconic European destinations, revealing a murky world of educated privilege and dubious morality, with something more piquant than ham and mustard sandwiches in the conservative attache case of the liberal catholic. I suggest you read it with a sense of urgency. After all, we are, the lost children of that era...Tags : An Expendable Spy - Kindle edition by Tom Greer. An Expendable Spy edition by Tom Greer Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book, "An Expendable Spy", by Tom Greer was recommended to me by a friend and I have enjoyed reading it tremendously!
It held my attention right to the end, and I couldn't wait to finish each chapter, and then on to the next one.
I understand this is his first published book, I look forward to reading his next book.

This was a good read and was, I think, indicative of the world of spying and intrigue. Ended about tthe way I thought it would.
You got to love a good spy thriller set in the time and spirit of James Bond. This is one your not going to put down until it's done.
.
A superb thriller with a lead character that encompasses the human emotions we all have but rarely express. The ending brings a tear and compassion for a well-drawn spy reminiscent of Smiley. Tom Greer has written a crime novel that stays in the memory.
This was a poor Read ! The plot was very feasible , and the Main Character was well defined , but the Book died well before the ending that was in itself a surprise ! To Me a waste of My Time !
Great read! Don't usually read this genre, but this book caught me by surprise and I very much enjoyed reading it. I found it quite engaging, having been to many of the locations mentioned. This novel will be a perfect gift for two specific friends of mine, who virtually inhale novels of this sort.
A little cliche, but with no major spelling & grammar issues to contend with this book was a readable diversion. The kindle edition has some missing words but that seems to be a formatting problem.
There are a few plot problems and some details seemed a bit wonky but overall it was an enjoyable read.
