Sharon Davis was definitely a fan of Dusty Springfield. Unlike other biographies of Dusty Springfield, Sharon Davis explores her as a person, singer, entertainer and unlikely activist. Sharon Davis treated her subject with enormous respect, class, dignity and grace. She approaches Dusty's flaws and all with understanding for it. I have found more information about Dusty's early upbringing to be essential in understanding the musical icon.If you're a Dusty Springfield fan, you might appreciate this book for understanding Dusty's musical, personal and professional career. There are plenty of books out there about her but I appreciated this book for it's approach without being mean or negative. Dusty Springfield sadly died before her 60th birthday from a long battle with cancer. In death, she was mourned greatly by the world. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Music Hall of Fame and was awarded an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) before her death. She was too ill to accept in person. Her friend and longtime manager, Vicki Wickham, went to the palace in her place. Ironically, Vicki earned the same honor a few years ago for her services to music.
If Dusty had lived longer, she would have been awarded Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to music. Her musical services and contributions included a wide catalog of recorded songs with the Lana Sisters; her brother Tom in The Springfields and a revered solo career. I would still like Dusty to have a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording. Dusty spent many years there in the seventies and eighties.
Unfortunately I discovered Dusty Springfield post-mortem, she had the voice, style and sound. I even enjoyed her latest hits from her CD "Reputation." She adapted well into the times and we lost her too soon. Sharon Davis was a lifelong Dusty Springfield fan and this book is truly a gift for other Dusty fans. Dusty was a complicated human being with the gift of song and music. She was a perfectionist too. She may have been a bit tempered at times but who isn't.
This book is excellent for covering Dusty's career and personal life. The author gives a balance of both with genuine understanding. I was surprised to learn that her OBE was given to her longtime assistant and friend, Pat Barnett Rhodes, by her brother. She appointed a neighbor couple to be her executors of her estate. I didn't even know that her pet cat was run over and died. Dusty was godmother to Pat's son, Lee. I learned a lot more about Dusty's life through this book. Dusty also a Star on the Walk of Fame in Brighton and inducted into the United Kingdom Music Hall of Fame too. There is a new musical about her life touring the country. She still deserves a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame for Recording. I knew that she would have been Dame Dusty if she had lived longer.

IF you love Dusty you will lo e this book! Nothing like the other books, this one does not trash her memory at all.
Loved it!
Not as interesting as I hoped it would be. Basic information was included but nothing spectacular.
Nice
This seems to be more personable at the end and not overly dramatic. Well written and researched. Recommended for all.
Definitive? Hardly...I bought this book by the previous reviewers glowing review, I was misled. The book does have one strong point, it tracks most of her songs, albums and performances, but is VERY light on any personal biography. If you are looking for a more personal history of Dustys interesting life, look elsewhere, because this book will not satisfy your interest. I am hoping there is someone out there that will, in fact, write the DEFINITIVE biography of our beloved Dusty. In the meantime I will enjoy the amazing music she has left us and hope for a well written, truthful and honest biography that she deserves.
Although I've had the "Dusty in Memphis" album in my music collection for decades, I never explored the rest of Dusty's canon until late last year (2011). My mistake. A mere few months later and I realize all that I've missed, and am patiently working my way through her ouevre. I bought this bio for the and found it both informative and lacking - it takes you through her many recording sessions and performances, sussing out details and, often, offering Dusty's own take on them. (She was her own worst critic.) For that fact alone I appreciate this book. But much of her off-stage life is absent or briefly mentioned, and that is a strike against it. While I have no interest in a Kitty Kelley tell-all, the book could have fleshed out more of her private life, giving us a better sense of Mary O'Brien the woman (as opposed to Dusty Springfield the singer). Yet, even with that criticism, I have no qualms recommending "A Girl Called Dusty" to others. I'm glad I read it.
Sharon wrote this book like a true fan. It thoroughly covers
Dusty's music career and private life with delicate honesty.
She has done a marvelous job here and seems to have felt
in her heart Dusty's request when she stated to the future
author "Be kind". The dust jacket is also nicely done with a
dramatic photo and quotes on the rear side. Thank you,
Ms. Davis!
